Concept ideas for our music video

We decided to think up different ideas for how we thought our music video should look separately and then come together with our ideas to decide how our video should look altogether. I came up with the idea of a doll house like setting which could have kitch furniture so that the video would have a 20th century American style look which appears in many indie pop videos and that our character could look the same way. The doll house setting would also be an unusual enough whimsical setting, to have it coincide with that indie pop convention. Another member of the group felt that our video should directly contrast with the lyrics and have a darker setting to create irony, which he identified as something the indie pop audience might enjoy seeing in our video. A third member of the group felt it was important to stick to the indie pop conventions of the setting amplifying and occasionally illustrating the lyrics, and that the set should be large and open so the artist is shown as being free, with lots of room to move. She therefore felt that our video should be set in the wood as this matches with our lyrics and their will be plenty of space for movement. Rather than have to choose one idea I suggested that we combine both ideas and have furniture like that of a doll house with 20th century furniture and the character styled in this fashion, in the middle of the woods. These two things unusually combined would also help to create irony in the piece, and allow us use all of the other indie pop conventions I mentioned above.

We decided it was important to stick to many of the indie pop genre conventions for making the video such as those I identified in an earlier post and after discussion we decided it was important to include many of Goodwin's other features of music videos such as thought beats, creating a star image by having lots of close up shots of the artist, and voyeuristically treating the human body. However we decided to break the convention of not having much intertextuality other than having a style from 20th century America. For example another member of the group felt that as well as the furniture having a 20th century American style, it should also look slightly as if it were from Calamity Jane. Now that we know the basic concept for our music video I will create a basic backstory/ narrative which will mention some other intertextual references that we will have in our video and will give us a brief outline about what will happen in our video.

After we decided on the concept for our video, we began to think of some possible locations such as wooded area behind a group member's house, Lady Dixon park, and Botanic Gardens, pictures of each of these locations can be seen below, left to right. In the end as it looked most like we imagined it and we would be less likely to be interrupted there we decided to go for the wooded area behind a group members' house.
